Fraud Awareness

Fraud can happen to anyone. Criminals use convincing tactics to pressure you into giving away your money or security details. You must stay alert and follow these rules at all times.

Fraudsters are always looking for their next opportunity. That’s why Drogheda Credit Union has put strong safeguards in place to protect our members.

What Drogheda Credit Union Will NEVER Do

We will never:

Ask you to share your PIN, password, or One Time Passcode (OTC)
Ask you for a code by phone, text, or email
Ask you to move your money to another account for “safekeeping”
Ask you to set up a new payee or transfer funds urgently
Send you links asking you to log in or provide details
Contact you claiming your account is at risk and demand immediate action

What You MUST Do

If you receive any unexpected call, text, or email:

STOP – Do not respond, click links, or share information
HANG UP – End the call immediately if you are speaking to someone
DO NOT SHARE – Never give your PIN, password, or OTC to anyone
VERIFY – Contact us directly using a trusted number

Important – One Time Passcodes (OTC)

Your One Time Passcode is a security key to your account.

It is used to approve logins, payments, and changes
Only you should ever use it
Never share it — not even with someone saying they work with the credit union or bank, they may not be telling the truth!

If someone asks you for your code, it is fraud.

If You Think You Are Beeing Scammed

Act immediately:

Stop all communication with the caller or sender
Do not complete any transactions
Contact us straight away so we can protect your account and cards

Offers & Rewards

You receive a message telling you about an offer or a reward to claim. These types of scams aim to trick you. Remember if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Never click links or provide codes unless you initiated the request.

Family Emergency Messages

Fraudsters pretend to be a relative and urgently request money. Always verify using a known phone number before sending funds.

Fake Links & Codes

You receive a message with a link or are asked for a code. Never click links or provide codes unless you initiated the request.

Golden Rules to Protect Yourself

Never share PINs, passwords, or codes
Never move money because someone tells you to
Never click links from unexpected messages
Always verify using official contact details

Fraudsters will try to manipulate you by:

Pretending to be from your credit union or authorities
Creating panic (“your account is compromised”)
Creating urgency (“act now or lose your money”)
Encouraging secrecy (“don’t tell anyone”)

These are all warning signs of fraud.

Common types of fraud

1Smishing (Text Scam)

Scammers send text messages pretending to be from trusted institutions like the credit union for example, attempting to trick you into revealing personal information such as banking or card details.

2Phishing (Email Scam)

Fraudulent emails that appear to come from reliable sources, asking you to click on a link or download an attachment. These emails are designed to steal sensitive information, such as your account credentials, PIN, or credit card numbers.

3Vishing (Phone Scam)

Scammers call, posing as representatives from trusted institutions or even authorities like An Garda Siochana, trying to convince you to share personal information or verification codes, often for setting up apps like Google Pay or WhatsApp
